Sometimes teens must leave their homes, because of neglect, abuse or abandonment. In our residential shelters, we provide them with a therapeutic living environment until a permanent living arrangement or treatment program is secured. In our shelters they can live safely, with nutritious meals, clothing and clean rooms, as they attend school and enjoy recreation. There are three nine-bed shelters, in the East Liberty area of Pittsburgh, two for girls and one for boys. All shelter residents receive drug and alcohol and mental health assessments, and can easily tap into other Wesley Spectrum services as needed, including anger management and counseling. Youth aged 13 to 18 can stay from 45 days to six months.
Our Shelter Services are contracted by the Allegheny County Office of Children, Youth and Families to provide immediate 24-hour access to adolescents in need of temporary shelter services in the county. Shelter staff members work collaboratively with county caseworkers to find the best long-term living arrangement to meet each child’s individual needs. Children return to their families, are placed in treatment programs or foster care, find adoptive parents or are discharged into independent living arrangements. Some have gone on to college. For more information, call the East Office at 412-342-2300.
