Special Education Services

A child with developmental, educational or behavioral health issues may not thrive in a larger, more competitive school. While some may just progress slowly, and not achieve their full potential, others will continue to fail, developing a negative self-image.

Every child learns in his or her own way

Wesley Spectrum gives each child educational support integrated with mental health treatment, all in a child-focused environment.

Wesley Spectrum believes that every child is valuable and should be treated with dignity and respect. Our special education services have two equal parts – educational and therapeutic. Our teachers identify and develop each child’s skills and talents, giving each one the environment that he or she needs to learn.

Equally important are the mental health programs that are fully integrated into the learning process, providing help that some children need before they can learn to their full potential. We have a range of programs, from focused, personal learning environments, to learning groups designed for children with Autism spectrum disorders.

Partnerships for Strength

Parents, teachers and school administrators know that traditional schools aren’t able to meet the specialized needs of every child. They refer these children to Wesley Spectrum where they will receive the help they need. When needed, we work with representatives of Juvenile Court, and Children, Youth and Families to help children get the therapy and education they need to learn and grow emotionally. In addition, psychiatrists and case managers at hospitals and other institutions may refer children who need special education as they recover from an emotional crisis. Our Special Education Methodology

To create better outcomes for every child, Wesley Spectrum relies on a unique methodology called Kid-Centered Decision Making. This method ensures that we make the best decisions every step of the way, by always asking, “What is best for this individual child?” It begins with Kid-Centered Planning that involves a personal assessment and individual education plan. The child’s progress is measured against the objectives set in his or her plan. This Kid-Centered Measurement enables us to adjust the direction and pace of his or her program.
All our educational programs take place in a Kid-Centered Environment – the total Milieu – which includes every piece of a child’s day and therapeutic relationships with other children, families and staff. Everything from staffing decisions and program development, to the temperature in the classroom, affect the growth and well-being of each child. Only when a child feels safe and comfortable in his or her environment will he or she be ready to adapt, learn and achieve.
